Berlin – German carmaker Volkswagen and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd have announced a strategic supply agreement for the use of key electric components. This partnership will allow Mahindra to utilize certain platform components and Volkswagen’s unified battery cell for their own electric platform, called INGLO.
The agreement marks a significant milestone for Mahindra, as they will be the first external partner to have access to Volkswagen’s unified cell technology. This new cell technology is expected to reduce costs by half and will be used for 80% of Volkswagen’s battery cells.
As a result of the partnership, Mahindra’s shares surged by up to 5.6%, reaching a record high in Mumbai trading.
The supply agreement is set to last for several years and is projected to have a total volume of approximately 50 gigawatt hours of energy storage capacity throughout its lifetime.
While this partnership is the first of its kind for Volkswagen, it aligns with their efforts to collaborate with other automakers and become a supplier of electric technology and parts. Their modular and open vehicle platform for electric vehicles, known as MEB, has been utilized not only for their own cars but also for models produced by other group companies, such as Skoda and Audi.
Volkswagen has expressed their intention to explore further opportunities for collaboration with Mahindra and other potential partners. Last September, the carmaker revealed that they were in talks with various manufacturers in Asia who were considering producing cars for the European market through a collaboration with Volkswagen.
This strategic partnership between Volkswagen and Mahindra highlights the growing importance of collaboration within the electric vehicle industry. By sharing resources and technology, automakers can work together to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and drive innovation in the sector.
