Europe’s Ambition to Lead in Battery Innovation

As the demand for batteries continues to soar worldwide, Europe is determined to become a global leader in battery research and innovation. With China currently dominating the market, Europe aims to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing and increase its share of battery production to 25% within the next decade.

In order to achieve this ambitious goal, Europe recognizes the need for constant innovation throughout the entire battery value chain. This includes advancements in raw materials, advanced materials, battery manufacturing, application development, and battery recycling.

However, innovation comes at a cost. The European Battery Alliance estimates that the European battery market could be worth €250 billion annually by 2025. To ensure the development of a competitive battery value chain, public funding for innovation efforts is crucial in reducing technology risks. The battery industry in Europe has already received substantial funding, with at least €1.7 billion in EU grants and loan guarantees between 2014 and 2020, along with additional state aid of up to €6 billion authorized between 2019 and 2021. With the BATT4EU partnership, the European Union plans to allocate up to €925 million for battery research and innovation under the Horizon Europe Program until 2027.

To avoid gaps in funding and duplication of efforts, the BATT4EU Partnership has developed the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). This agenda, which incorporates inputs from various European battery initiatives, outlines time-based priorities for research and innovation in every aspect of the battery value chain. It also highlights 6 imperatives that need to be addressed to enhance the competitiveness of the European battery industry. These imperatives include matching industry needs with research and innovation, reducing reliance on imported raw materials, improving battery affordability, enhancing flexibility in manufacturing and recycling, implementing a safe and sustainable battery framework, and supporting continuous high-quality research.

The SRIA serves as a guide to funding and aims to maximize the impact of battery research and innovation in Europe. It promotes collaboration and coordination among stakeholders to put Europe at the forefront of battery technology. By aligning research and innovation priorities, Europe can establish itself as a global leader in the battery industry and ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent.
