The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest today, involving one of their own deputies. Randy Walker, an eight-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was taken into custody on two warrants related to an incident that occurred on April 2nd.
During an internal review, which included the examination of body-worn camera footage and statements from other deputies present at the scene, it was discovered that Deputy Walker had used excessive force during an arrest. The incident began when Walker reported that a silver Chevrolet Malibu had a stolen license plate from Fort Pierce. This prompted him to follow the vehicle, believing that the occupants may have been involved in criminal activity due to the recent rise in shootings in the area.
Body camera footage shows Deputy Walker approaching the driver and passenger of the vehicle after they stopped near Turnpike Feeder Road and Winter Garden Parkway. In the video, he is seen pointing a gun at them, prompting the driver to question his actions. Walker then instructs the driver to turn off the car, but the driver drives off instead, leading to a pursuit.
The chase continues into a wooded area, during which the driver can be heard yelling in pain and pleading with the deputies to stop their K9 unit. Thanks to the body-worn cameras worn by all deputies and the department’s checks and balances, this incident was brought to light.
The internal review led to a comprehensive investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division, in coordination with the State Attorney’s Office. As a result, two warrants were issued by a judge. One of the charges against Deputy Walker includes making a false statement, as it was discovered that his incident report did not accurately reflect the events that transpired.
During the investigation, Deputy Walker was initially placed on paid administrative leave. However, on Saturday, he was switched to unpaid administrative leave pending a notice of termination. Sheriff Keith Pearson expressed the difficulty faced by the deputies who had to investigate one of their own.
Deputy Walker voluntarily turned himself in to the authorities on Saturday, where he posted bond.
