(WDRB) — Construction workers involved in the massive $6 billion battery plant project in Kentucky, aimed at supplying Ford Motor Co.’s electric vehicles, are facing a serious environmental issue. According to a private environmental analysis acquired by WDRB News and discussions with workers, the job site is plagued with significant mold exposure.
The construction teams at the BlueOval SK site in Glendale have reported respiratory problems and headaches, with some even falling ill due to the mold. Shockingly, the contractors in charge have failed to adequately address the situation, leaving workers in a vulnerable state.
Dec. 14, 2023, the date of an environmental report obtained from a Kentucky environmental contractor, reveals the presence of mold in the air and on wooden crates that contain equipment shipped from Korea to the BlueOval site. In some cases, the concentration levels of mold were found to be “heavy”. The report emphasizes the urgent need for a “mold protocol” to be implemented as soon as possible to safeguard the workers’ well-being. However, despite the recommendations of the environmental contractor, little has been done so far to address the issue.
Responding to inquiries about the mold problem, BlueOval SK’s spokeswoman, Mallory Cooke, stated that the company is aware of an ongoing investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. She also clarified that the construction workers on the site are not direct employees of BlueOval SK, thus implying a certain level of detachment from the situation.
BlueOval SK, a joint venture between Ford and SK On, its Korean technology partner, is now constructing two battery factories in Kentucky and another in Stanton, Tennessee. With the aim of establishing itself as a prominent player in electric vehicle production, Ford is investing heavily in this project. However, the environmental concerns surrounding the site pose a significant challenge to the company’s ambitions.
The construction site, touted as the largest economic development project in Kentucky’s history, is teeming with activity. Numerous union tradespeople, enticed by daily incentives of up to $200 in addition to their wages and overtime, are diligently working long hours, often up to 10 or 12 a day, six to seven days a week. However, amidst this hustle and bustle, the looming issue of mold exposure threatens both the progress of the project and the health of the workers involved.
